Relocating to Huntsville

I moved to Huntsville too. Here's what Zillow won't tell you.

I relocated here myself. Tell me your commute and your budget, and I'll show you the few areas worth your weekend before you book a flight.

What Zillow won't tell you

The questions I get on every first call

Which side of town should I live on?

Start with where you'll drive every morning. If that's Redstone Arsenal or Cummings Research Park, most people I work with look at Madison, west Huntsville and south Huntsville first. Hampton Cove is gorgeous, but it sits on the far side of the mountain, so that drive is longer.

Huntsville or Madison?

Madison is its own city, right next door, with its own school system. A lot of families compare the two districts before they look at a single house, so I'll walk you through both.

New build or an older home?

You'll find plenty of both. New construction keeps popping up on the edges of town. The older, tree-lined streets near downtown, like Blossomwood and Twickenham, have a feel you can't get in a new subdivision.

What can't I tell from listing photos?

Road noise, and how steep the backyard really is. I check those for you on a video walkthrough, so you're not finding out on moving day.

Will my money really go further here?

For most people coming from DC, Denver or Salt Lake City, yes. How much further depends on the area, so I'll show you real numbers for the homes you'd actually consider.

Coming from DC, Colorado or Utah?

What changes when you move here

Washington, DC

  • Your commute shrinks. Huntsville's average commute is about 19 minutes, according to the U.S. Census. After the Beltway, that feels like cheating.
  • Federal work runs deep here. Redstone Arsenal is home to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, a big Army presence and a growing FBI campus.
  • Summers are just as sticky. Winters are a lot gentler.

Colorado

  • You may know a few neighbors. U.S. Space Command is moving its headquarters to Redstone Arsenal in phases.
  • The trails are close. Monte Sano's trailheads start minutes from downtown. They're hills, not the Rockies, and I'll always be honest about that.
  • The weather flips. You'll trade dry heat for humid summers, and snow days for the odd dusting.

Utah

  • The work feels familiar. Aerospace and defense are the big industries in town.
  • It's greener. Expect more rain and a lot less snow to shovel.
  • There's still water to play on. Lake Guntersville is about an hour away for weekends on the boat.

Where I'd look

Where I'd start, depending on you

  • You want a short drive to Redstone or Research Park

Madison · West & South Huntsville

Quick on and off the Arsenal, with the schools a lot of families ask me about first.

  • You want to walk to coffee and dinner

    Twickenham · Blossomwood

Older homes, big trees and downtown a few minutes away.

  • You want trees, hills and some breathing room

    Jones Valley · McMullen Cove

Wooded lots tucked against the mountains, still close to the city.

  • You want newer homes and a golf course nearby

    Hampton Cove

Newer neighborhoods, the Robert Trent Jones golf course and mountain views on the drive home.

Not sure which one is you? Tell me how you live and I'll send you a shortlist.

Buying from out of state

You can do most of this from where you are now

  1. We talk.

You tell me about work, school and weekends. I listen for the things you won't think to mention.

  2. You get your shortlist.

I send the areas that fit, then walk homes for you on FaceTime.

  3. You fly in once.

Every showing on that trip is worth it. If you can't come back for closing, we can often close remotely.

Meet Lauren

I was the one scrolling listings at midnight

A few years ago I was the one scrolling Huntsville listings from [CITY, STATE], trying to guess which neighborhoods were actually nice and which just photographed well. We moved here in [YEAR] for [REASON].

I learned the hard way that [ONE REAL LESSON]. Now I help families do it the easy way. You tell me how you live, and I'll tell you where you'll actually like living.

Signed, Lauren
